Plague Parallels

During the pandemic lockdown, my typical work that deals with identity politics and memory took a hiatus, while I looked to my windows for inspiration. My neighbor to the west is a large cemetery that provided a verdant yet ominous view that filled my sketchbooks and canvases. I watched the rising numbers of sick and dying with the same dread and grief I felt during the rising tide of Hurricane Sandy, drawing a parallel between the plagues of pestilence and flood. As I poured my anxiety into this work, I counted myself as lucky to have survived both.
